High-Speed Internet Service Installation

  1. For Shenandoah County customers, place a High-Speed Internet service request with Shentel Customer Service located at 106 South Main Street, Edinburg, or dial 984-5224 or 1.800.SHENTEL, Opt. 1.

  2. A service order will be entered and Customer Service will confirm with the customer how the service should be installed – over an existing line or a new line. The customer must also select a DSL rate plan at this time. Customers must provide a daytime number where they can be reached for questions, or scheduling installer appointments.

  3. Customers should make preparations to have a NIC card installed in order to activate the service on their PC. Customers must have the NIC card installed before an appointment can be scheduled to test and activate the service, unless using a USB connection.

Note: Existing Shentel Internet customers will be required to provide their Shentel Internet password at the time the order is placed. Customers should contact Technical Support if they cannot remember their password. The password is required to pre-configure the DSL modem prior to installation.

  4. After the service order is placed, a Shentel installer will contact the customer to schedule an appointment to test their line. Appointments will not be made unless the customer has acquired the necessary NIC. DSL service installed over an existing voice line will disrupt the ability to place/receive calls during the test period. Customers must be present during the line testing and modem installation.

On the day of the appointment, the installer will test the customer's line from the nearest telephone company central office to the customer's location. When a customer qualifies, the DSL modem will be installed. Once the modem has been hooked-up and powered, the maximum transmission rates will be determined. For voice and DSL services over the same line, all phone extensions working off the line will be checked for noise. If present, noise suppression efforts will be undertaken to eliminate the problem.

The customer will be advised in the event modem speeds are lower than the selected DSL rate plan. The Shentel installer will depart once the modem is installed, the transmission rates established, and any noise issues resolved.

A Shentel Central Office Technician will assist the customer with their PC configuration, if needed.

As part of the DSL set-up, Shentel will assist the customer in configuring a single PC to operate with the DSL modem.  Network set-ups or multiple PC configurations are not included.  If networking services are required, please refer to High-Speed Internet Requirements for referral to companies engaged in this business.
